At approximately 1821 hours, Donald B. Hoffman Jr., age 46 of Anchorage, reported two overdue snowmachiners in the Sutton area. Investigation revealed Tacie Hoffman, age 26 of Anchorage, and a 14 year old female, left the North 58 Mile Road area near Sutton to go snowmachining in the Seventeen Mile Lake and Slipper Lake area for about two hours. Temperatures fell to five degrees, and the victims had no food or water, no extra clothing and no means to make a shelter of fire. After they failed to return by 1815 hours, Hoffman reported them as overdue. Alaska State Troopers and five searchers from the Mat Su Search and Rescue organized a search of the main snow machine trails in the area without result. Troopers notified the Rescue Coordination Center (RCC) and requested a search mission to be flown. RCC responded with a helicopter and located the victims approximately .2 miles northeast of Slipper Lake. RCC transported both victims to Mat Su Regional as both victims were in advanced states of hypothermia.
